Whole Fresh Produce

Food safety of whole fresh produce is governed by the Produce Safety Rule of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).  Currently, Produce Safety Rule compliance is required for farms with an average annual sales revenue of $500,000. For more questions related to compliance, and the elements of the Rule, please refer to this FDA Fact Sheet.

If you are required to comply under the Produce Safety Rule, you must have one manager / farm employee take the Produce Safety Alliance training course. You are also encouraged to complete a voluntary On-Farm Readiness Review (OFRR) with UVM Extension and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture to determine your level of preparedness for an FDA farm inspection.

The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is also encouraging farms to participate in the online Produce Portal to get regular notifications and sign up for an OFRR.

For more information on produce safety, visit the Agency of Ag's website.
