We are pleased to have a new client in the Vermont Food Venture Center Kitchens, Vermont Cheeseless. This mother-daughter duo is on a tasty adventure, handcrafting gluten- and dairy-free frozen desserts. As they say, “We may have taken the cheese out of cheesecake, but you would never know!” While they produced at the Vermont Venture Center Kitchens this spring, our team hopped in the kitchen to learn more about their business. Erin has four daughters: two sets of twins, about a decade apart in age.

Erin worked at UVM for 15 years, and she quit her job when the second set of twins came along. After a few years at home, she was ready for a new venture. Erin and her family love good food. Their neighbors Martin and Susan Lewis started and ran Vermont Cheeseless, and would give the family cheesecake every holiday. Erin stored it in a freezer in the barn; each family member would sneak out and steal pieces of cheesecake because they all loved it. None of the family is vegan or gluten-free, they just enjoy tasty food and they couldn’t get enough of the cheesecake. Eventually, their neighbors wanted to pass along the business and the next chapter of Vermont Cheeseless was born.

Erin owns and runs the business with one of the twins, Izzy, a high school senior who fits production in between a busy schedule of school, sports, student council, and musicals. Izzy runs production while Erin takes charge of marketing, finance, and all the rest of the business operations. Together they have tweaked the recipe, scaled up the business, and expanded their accounts. During our conversation the duo had an easy rapport with each other, and they indicated that working together in this capacity has improved their relationship.

Vermont Cheeseless currently has three main flavors: maple walnut, chocolate, and raspberry. The dessert is made with cashews, silken tofu, rice flour, Vermont maple syrup, local VT fruit, and other easy-to-pronounce and simple ingredients. During the summer and fall you can find their treats at the Shelburne, Waitsfield, and Middlebury farmers markets. You can also get them year-round in over 25 co-ops and markets across VT and NH.
